Mr. Giorgio Rochat in his fine work Gli arditi della Grande Guerra mentions an episode which took place on 4th September 1917 on Mt. San Gabriele (646 m), when during the attack of the Italian assault troops (arditi) trooper Colacci fought a duel with General HON, commander of the 4th Austro-Hungarian Infantry Brigade. According to some sources he killed him during a short firefight, while other sources claim he was seriously wounded and captured, along with two other high ranking staff officers from the brigade headquarters. I am attaching below scans from Rochat's book with underlined text where he mentions this episode. It is basically quoted in all other major books about Isonzo Front, so I cannot make anywhere any double checks. This story is OK except the fact that I am having a helluva hard times to find out who was this General HON from the 4th Austro-Hungarian Infantry Brigade. I have checked the list of killed generals in WW1 and no one is matching to him, not to mention that I couldn't find any general with such a surname on the list of A-H Generals in WW1. It is not Major-General Hrozny, the commander of 57th Infantry Division nor Colonel Laxa from the 18th Inf. Brigade. So who is he??? Could he be the commander of the 5th IB of the 57th Inf. Division? I know that Colonel Gustav von Hartmann from IR.41 assumed the command of the brigade in 1917 after the battle, so this outfit brigade seems to be a strong candidate, but does anyone know who was in charge of it before Colonel Hartmann's arrival? I think this explains both mistakes in your books. By the way, a brigade is commanded by a Colonel or a junior Generalmajor - never by a General, of course. I think I know which Noë you have on your mind - Oberst Artur Noë, former commander of LIR.23 (Zara) on the Gorizia bridgehead in 1915-16. I won't argue the names, which I am sure are correct, but I remain somewhat skeptical at the claim of yours that "General Hon" was Colonel Noë. He would certainly fit very well into the story, except... well.... he was in command of the 4th Gebirgs-Brigade. From the documents which I have here the 4th Gebirgs-Brigade was not on the Mt. San Gabriele sector on 4th September 1917, when the Italian arditi jumped from their trenches, took Quota 552, moved alonged the ridge, taking the peak of Mt. San Gabriele (646 m) and then advanced a bit further southward towards Mt. San Daniele (534 m). Judging from the documents and other sources this incident with ardito Colacci took place somewhere between the peak of Monte San Gabriele (646 m) and the Vratca Pass or Quota 408 as known then, just between Mt. San Gabriele and Mt. San Daniele (-> see the maps). What was Oberst Noë, the commander of the 4th Gebirgs-Brigade of the 58th Division doing there is beyond my imagination since this whole sector was defended by 18th and 5th Infantry Brigades of the 57th Infantry Division. 58th Division was further south. Actually the southern slopes of Mt. San Gabriele and Quota 408 were defended by the 5th Infantry Brigade and not by 4th Infantry Brigade (part of 11th Inf. Division) or 4th Gebirgs-Brigade (part of 58th Inf. Division). Do you perhaps have any info who commanded the 5th Infantry Brigade of the 57th Infantry Division in August 1917? From what I could tell Colonel Gustav von Hartmann from IR.41 was assignedto command the brigade in October 1917, so it could be because the previous commander was wounded (captured?) in the fight on 4th September 1917 with the Italian assault troops-arditi. As for the number of casualties - yeah... the real number of them was around 1.000. Lt. Farina who wrote this account about the conquest of Mt. In normal circumstances I would agree with you, Glenn. However, in this particular case this was not written by Signor Rochat but by Lt. S. Farina. It is attached to his book as appendix. And Farina wasn't just anybody. He was actually in command of the arditi company which stormed and occupied the peak of Mt. San Gabriele, so I assume he knew what was going on in his little company. His report does drive me mad, though.

Well, it is obvious that Albori most probably wasn't our guy either. I am more inclined to believe that our brave ardito Colacci most probably got in a fight with one of the high decorated staff officers of the 18th or 5th Infantry Brigades (or something like that) and thought he is fighting a general at least. The Italians are sometimes prone to the exeggeration. It seems I will have to take the story out of my manuscript. Splendid. Well, this usually happens when you are writing a regimental history which starts with July 1914 and ends with October 1918. At the end, when you are almost finished, you find in your notebook a lot of small, detailed and unforeseen questions, which at the time of archive digging and research couldn't be foreseen. By the way, there is a list of all Oberste and Generale KIA during WW1 published - I published this list too in my Schematismus and it is also written on the marvel-plates at the Ruhmenshalle at HGM in Vienna. I take it that that killed FML in 1917 was FML Samuel Apor de Al-Torja. Oberst Ägydius (also written: Egydius) Adamovic commander of IR 97 from IX. - XI.1914 - shortly before he was promoted to Oberst at the IR 15 and it seems that his performance was not ok because he was immediately retired in early 1915. As retired Oberst he was ennobeld with predicate "von Wagstätten" on the 3rd of August 1917. In 1918 he was reactivated as Generalmajor engaged as "Inspizient der der heimgekehrten Kriegsgefangenen" at the MilKomdo Temesvar. I have here a Oberst Josef Knöfler (interimistic) commander of 111.Landsturm-Infanterie-Brigade July/August 1916. He was the commander of LdstIR 25 but his basic unit was IR 82, also winner of the GTM for Officers. No help by this Oberst Graf - in my opinion it could be Oberst (since 1.9.1915) im Generalstab Johann Graf at last in 1918 Generalstabchef of the XVI. Korps. Officers of the Generalstab alwas had to do some duty with the troops for short periodes - so he could be attached to the FJB 9 for some months not mentioned at the Schematismus. Best wishes, Jörg

I have General Brosch's manuscript about the history of IR.97 in Weltkrieg 1914-1918. Most unfortunate regiment. First their commander went "ga-ga" in August 1914, before the war they had a couple of manijacks in command, then those demonstrations in Triest in 1902 and finally those executions during the Zloczow fiasco... I have here a Oberst Josef Knöfler (interimistic) commander of 111.Landsturm-Infanterie-Brigade July/August 1916. He was the commander of LdstIR 25 but his basic unit was IR 82, also winner of the GTM for Officers. Yep, that's him. He led the counterattack on 4th September 1917 to recapture Mt. San Gabriele. Do you have any indices when and for which action did he receive the GTM for Officers? Was it perhaps for his performance on Mt. San Gabriele in September 1917? No help by this Oberst Graf - in my opinion it could be Oberst (since 1.9.1915) im Generalstab Johann Graf at last in 1918 Generalstabchef of the XVI. Korps. However, my documents here, which are dated November and December 1917 lists his as Oberstleutnant Graf, interim commander of IR.87. Obviously not your Oberst GRAF from 1915?! Cannot find no more data about him, except that he was interim commander of IR.87 for some time in late 1917 and early 1918. In usual circumstances I would have not bothered myself to find his first name, but (un)fortunately he was in command when the Lower Styrians captured Grave di Papadopoli in early November 1917, so I have to put him in the history. So please keep your eyes open if you find any other candidate. He should have appeared on the k.u.k. Schematismus for 1918. Any chance you could also check these fellows: 9.) Oberstleutnant ? HUTTER from IR.47 (from 1914-1915). Probably seconded to IR.47 from another regiment, because I could find no Hutter in the Schematismus for 1914. 11.) Oberlautnant ? SEIFERT from 1915.
