That does not preclude the posing of genealogical questions but it should be understood that one is unlikely to receive detailed answers regarding indivudual soldiers, especially those who held very junior rank. But what's the difference between geneologists and geologists, anyway? Both putt around, digging through strata of conglomerate material, dating things, and insisting they know what they're doing. This is my experience with Kriegsarchiv: I have asked the data about my grandfather's presence at WWI. Nine days later they provide me with an answer. It is very good to know there is such an institution working on archive data and without any charge. I am very gratefull to their effort. Now (maybe for Glenn) they replied to me that no document exist linking my grandfather to WWI although he was participant starting with 1912 when he was called (perhaps the word is : mobilised) and later (1914) he continued to stay during all four years returning 1918. Can it be that all data is lost? If the data is not lost where can one look for? Thanks in advance for any help. smustra P.S. The name of my grandfather was: Mirko Bizjak (born 1881 at Zlatar , Kroatien) and the Kriegsarchive tells me that no such name was found at: -russische Kriegsgefangenschaft -Vormerkbltter der Feldspitler 1914-1918 -Phonetischer Kataster fr Kriegsverluste 1914-1918.

Posts: 0 (11/30/03 18:56:45) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	For junior officers and enlisted men, if they were out of Hungary and Croatia, they could also be listed in the Honved files of the Hungarian "national guard" of sorts. Hungary and Croatia were more or less one nation after about 1100 CE, and both peoples were in the Honved. There are some files that came into the U.S. with the last two Hungarian prime ministers' records (under the empire) and ended up in the East European Immigrant Archives in St. Paul, Minnesota. I don't have an e-mail address, though, sorry. Also bear in mind that after 1661, the Wesselenyi conspiracy (an attempted revolution against the Habsburgs that was nipped in the bud when Baron Wesselenyi died of a sudden heart attack--with a raft of papers strewn about...), a number of branches of families that had been involved changed their names--but the Imperial records keepers never officially recognized the changes. However, the parish priests and some local records keepers did. Thus it is possible for some families to have, literally, records in two surnames, and few cross-references. It's taken me and my cousins over a decade to sort out as little of my late grandfather's family as we have. I do have a question for military history buffs, though that goes before 1848. An ancestor of mine through my late grandmother, Apollonia Maria Garai--yes, that Garai family--she was one of the most prominent land heiresses in Somogy county at the turn of the last century, founded an order in the 1400's called the "Order of the Red Dragon." It was to honor Hungarian and other connected peoples' knights and nobles who had demonstrated the most commitment to the protection of the Hungarian kingdom, and its ideals and independent ways of life. I'd like to find out more about it and who was in charge of admitting "members,"--my ancestor the head of the Garai, or the king, and to whom did control fall, after the kingdom became part of the Habsburg empire. It was not founded to support the empire. If I can find out more about it, I have connections to some historical "re-enactment groups" that would like to consider adding it to their repetoire of historical presentations and related activities. They now charge for research - ar far as I understood - Euro 38,- minimum for a person related research, which includes half an hours research work of one of the employees. Additional time will be charged. For research done there yourself you have to get a pass for either a week, a month or a year. Cost ranges from 10 to 30 Euro. Posts: 1 (04/06/04 19:48:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have a picture of Jozef Kania, my great grandfather who was a farmer and postman in the village of Buczkowice, Poland (just south of Bielsko-Biala). The street he lived on was Kaniowa in Buczkowice. Two years ago, one of my Polish relatives shared the attached picture with me, claiming that it was our great grandfather. I have a picture of Jozef Kania taken years after this military picture and we compared facial features and Im confident the photograph is Jozef Kania. I would like to find his military records, but I have no idea where to start. I know the exact location where he lived in Buczkowice. And I have oral history accounts that indicate he was born about 1856 in Buczkowice and died about 1940 in the same town. Do you have any suggestions? I have no knowledge about what regiment or anything else that would help pin down his military service. Cordially, Alan J. Kania

Im a mexican artist, but my greatgrandfather was a venetian (Antonio Gheno). I think that Gheno was a austrian volunteer, because he arrived at Tlaxcala, Mxico in 1865; his friends and neighbors were Shatter or Shaffer, Stankiewicz, Zeleny, Petzold and Gruber. How I can if this is certain? You coud help me? What can I do? Thanks.... "vicentino"

This was a uniform and equipment question, not a genealogy one. I know who he was and in which regiment he served and when. I merely thought to inquire upon those who make historical matters their particular passion. It also occurred to me that you might already have the standard form AH military identity papers translated. Seems pretty reasonable to me. Thank you for the suggestions as to further research into his personal military service. If I find the time I will explore those options. Regards, Ed Wilton

However if anyone can find any info on the below i would be truely grateful Friedrich Edler von Schiefner He married Maria Schiefner (no maiden name known) He was "Offizier" in the emperor's army and stationed in the former Yugoslavia. For his service he received the title "Edler von" from the Emperor, Franz Joseph. thanks

Posts: 5 (05/11/09 13:03:41) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Those who wish to trace the military records of individuals who were officers in the Hungarian Honvéd in either WWI or II, can write, in either Hungarian or English, to the following: Hadtörténeti Intézet és Múzeum Hadtörténelmi Levéltar 1014 Budapest Kapisztrán tér 2-4 Hungary I was very sucessful in obtaining copies of original documents about my father who served as an officer in WWI. They also have a website that has a list of the officers from 1917 to 1944 listed alphabetically for each year. Unfortunately some of the years are not available due to the fact that many of the documetns were destroyed during the bombings of WWII. But it is a very good website, and a good source of information.
