Hello everybody
I'm from Quertaro, Mxico, which incidentally is the city where Archduke Maximilian was besieged, tried & executed by firing squad. Mxico was part of Karl V's empire, was goberned by the Spanish Habsburgs until Charles II, had an Imperial government in the midst of a civil war, headed by Maximilian & supported by Austrian volunteers. Best regards, Jorge jorgemaruri@yahoo.com |

I am from Arizona | ||

My grandfather moved to Arizona in 1919 from Maribor, Slovenia. Most Austrian Germans left Maribor with the demise of the empire. As a child he read Zane Grey novels of the "wild west" in the U.S. So when the war ended ... he took a ship to Ellis Island .... got on the first train to Arizona and here we are.

Hello, I live in Wales, but have an Italian (from the Valsugana) father and Scottish mother. One of my great grand fathers fought on the Italian Front in the Great War, so I am very interested in this site

My father and his family are from Novaledo, which is between Levico and Borgo, in the upper Valsugana, strange really that they should be from the Welch Tirol, and I live in Wales land of the Welch (old English spelling)

Hi,
I'm going to Levico in the summer and was in Valsugana some years ago. Great landscape,especially altopiano. Go to digilander.iol.it/franzivitlacil/ and find some great fotos. The man who took the fotos has his roots in Moravia! |

I was born and raised in Great Falls, Montana but now live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. My paternal great grandparents, Kudrnas and Pavliceks, were Czechs from Bohemia who had emigrated to Simferopol in the Crimea in the mid-19th century and then to North Dakota in the 1890s. My maternal great-grandparents, Slezaks and Svhilas, were Czechs from Bohemia who emigrated to North Dakota in the 1890's. Both my parents were raised in Czech-speaking farming "ghettos" in western North Dakota.
I became interested in A-H military history after discovering that two of my grandmother's first cousins served in the US army during World War One. I was intrigued with the idea that certainly some of their cousins left behind in Austria were serving as well--cousins vs. cousins! A common occurence I would imagine. Jason Kudrna |

I'm new to this web-site also. What caught me in this forum was that fact that you're from Poland. I assume that you had some family that served in the AH army during the war. I imagine that you also tried to hunt down their military record. My question is were you able to do it? I've been told that after the war most records were sent back to the country where the conscripts oringial recruiting area/center was. In my granfathers case it would be KraKow in Poland (more than likely). If this was the case, I doubt that the records survived WWII and the Nazi's and if they did, I doubt they survived the Soviets. My only hope might be that he was drafted later in the war, and placed into a unit from an Austrian recruiting center. I understand that as the war dragged on, conscripts were often placed in units other than those of their traditional recruitment centers. Your (or anyones) thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
