Was a soldier or officer spposed to know the infantry regiments number just by seeing the color of the regiment on the uniform?

The Infantry regiments, as far i know, did not have the regiments number on the buttons, like the sappers, for example.

			<description><![CDATA[ I am looking for any reference to my grandfather who was in the first world war.  He was from the village of Setschen, in what was once Yugoslavia.
